Glossary of Terms

Well, you know that Britain and New Zealand share a common language. It's English. But there are many differences between British English and New Zealand English. Words are used differently, and many British words have different meanings or are unique to the British culture.

Bank Holiday = National Holiday
Barrister = Lawyer (no corresponding definition)
Bin, Dustbin (the one outside) = Rubbish Bin
Box (slang term for TV) = Tele (slang term for TV)
Buggy = Baby stroller
Building Society = Savings Bank
Cashier (bank) = Bank Teller
Casualty = Emergency room
Chat Show = Talk Show
Crisps = Potato chips
Current account (banking) = Cheque account (banking)
Dialling code = Area code
Dustman = Rubbishman
Flat = Apartment
Indicators = Blinkers, turn signals
Flyover = Overpass
Football = Soccer
Gangway = Aisle
Interval = Intermission
Jumper = Jersey
Level crossing = Railroad crossing
Lift = Elevator
Lorry = Truck
Match (as in sports) = Game (as in sports)
Motorist, Motoring = Driver, Driving
Old age pensioner = Senior Citizen
Pillar box / post box = Mailbox
Pitch = Playing field
Post = Mail
Pupils = Students (at school)
Retirement pension plan = Superannuation scheme
Rise (in salary) = Raise (in salary)
Solicitor = Lawyer
Tannoy = P.A. (public address) System
Terrace House = Townhouse
Van = Delivery truck
Zebra crossing = Pedestrian crossing
