Olympics in Britain 2012 Competition

The LONDON Olympics Games Competition

With the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games almost coming to an end, and to celebrate the hand-over to the next Olympic Games due to be held in London in 2012, we are inviting New Zealand schools to take part in our first ever Olympic Games competition.

Your school is invited to host their own London Olympic Games. You can be as creative as you like, ie - games including paper plate discus, paper straw javelin, cotton ball shot put, right-handed marble grab, left-handed sponge squeeze etc! The children can represent their own countries ie - Murphy represents Ireland; Ravi represents India; etc. These are just some ideas, the ball is in your court! This is your opportunity to be creative in hosting your own Games at your school. Remember you are hosting the Games in London so don't forget to show us the best of British!

We welcome Teachers to send in photographs of the day or put together a short film (3 minutes) of your school's London Olympic Games event and send it to us. Whilst we would prefer to receive entries on DVD, VHS tape will also be accepted.

George Fergusson, British High Commissioner will judge the competition and will be looking for creativity and innovation. Your Olympics should incorporate 5 events, at least one of which being a sport that you invent, in keeping with the futuristic theme of London 2012.

The winning entry will have their film posted on our educational children's website and YouTube. Schools will be responsible for arranging parental consent for their children to be involved in the film, which may then be posted on these websites. There are also lots of great "britain4kiwikids" prizes - bags, t-shirts, drink bottles, etc up for grabs and book vouchers!

The competition will close on 26 September 2008. The winning school will be notified on 13 October 2008.

The British High Commission's children's website www.britain4kiwikids.org.nz has been designed specifically for children to enable them to conduct research on-line. The site was developed in consultation with groups of children from Wellington Schools.
