Cheese Rolling
This event takes place in different parts of the country, usually on the Spring Bank Holiday Monday in May. The best known is held at Coopers Hill in Gloucestershire. A round cheese is rolled down a steep hill chased by competitors. The winner is the first person to grab the cheese.
It is a spectacular to watch but hazardous to take part in, with many competitors ending up with broken arms and legs! Traditionally the cheese is Double Gloucester in Coopers Hill. Other cheeses are rolled in other parts of the country; guess which cheese they roll in the town of Stilton... !!
Thousands gather to watch this remarkable spectacle which has been happening for at least 200 years, and some people think for centuries before!
Last year, former All Black and TV presenter Marc Ellis won the second race of the day down the hill. In fact, there were quite a few kiwis at the event, because they came first in two of the four Cheese Rolling events!
